Course Description: This 62-clock hour EKG technician training program is designed to prepare students for a career in the healthcare industry as skilled EKG technicians. The program covers the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary for operating EKG equipment, performing electrocardiograms, and recognizing common cardiac arrhythmias. Students will learn through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on training, including practical experience in performing EKGs on real patients.

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:

  1. Understand the Cardiovascular System: Describe the anatomy and physiology of the heart, its electrical conduction system, and the circulation of blood through the heart.

  2. Operate EKG Equipment: Proficiently set up and calibrate EKG machines, place electrodes correctly, and perform standard 12-lead EKGs.

  3. Identify Normal and Abnormal Waveforms: Recognize normal EKG waveforms (P, QRS, T) and intervals (PR, QRS, QT) and differentiate them from abnormal patterns.

  4. Recognize Cardiac Arrhythmias: Identify and classify common arrhythmias, including sinus, atrial, and ventricular rhythms, as well as bradycardias and tachycardias.

  5. Perform 12-Lead EKGs: Understand the significance of 12-lead EKGs in diagnosing coronary artery disease and determining cardiac axis.

  6. Conduct Special EKG Procedures: Explain and perform stress testing, Holter monitoring, and event monitoring procedures.

  7. Interpret EKG Findings: Accurately interpret EKG findings and prepare detailed reports for healthcare providers.

  8. Adhere to Safety and Infection Control Protocols: Follow safety protocols, maintain infection control, and ensure patient privacy during EKG procedures.

  9. Understand Legal and Ethical Considerations: Recognize legal and ethical responsibilities in healthcare, including patient rights and informed consent.

  10. Prepare for Professional Certification: Prepare for professional certification as an EKG technician, which may require additional study and examination.

  11. Develop Professional Skills: Build professional skills, including resume writing, job search strategies, and understanding career pathways in the healthcare field.
